Farmers Insurance group of companies was entirely owned by a subsidiary of B.A.T industries from 1988. The B.A.T industries were merged completely with Zurich Insurance Company in 1998. Farmers Insurance Group was the fifth largest casualty and property insurer in 1997, with its headquarters in Los Angeles. The Farmers Insurance was formerly known as Farmers Automobile Inter Insurance. The company was the brainchild of co-founders John C. Tyler and Thomas E. Leavey.
